IMAGINE your family has been homeless and staying in a shelter and you’re now walking into your new, permanent home. Imagine all the excitement and stress that comes with that...Children run around, choosing their new special corners and rooms. You look about and see where future memories will soon be made. And then someone asks, “What’s for dinner?”.
But there’s no need to worry about how to fill those hungry tummies because you already have several nights of food ready at your finger-tips! You walk across the kitchen and set the oven to 450 because your freezer is stocked with family-sized portions of Turkey Tettrazini, Pulled Barbeque, Tamale Pie, etc., as well as side dishes, ready to be heated and devoured. Your freezer is filled with a week’s worth of dinners and you have time to attend to your children as they take in their new home. But you don’t just have dinners. The next morning, you have oatmeal and milk ready for breakfast, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch, as well as other healthy snacks to get your family through the day.
This scenario is the vision behind Luke 14:12’s new 1st Meals program, a partnership with Safe Haven Family Shelter. Safe Haven Family Shelter has a goal to transition 100 families from homelessness to sustainable homes in 2019. Luke 14:12 is excited to be a part of this transition process by providing much-needed meals and snacks to help these families during their first week of living in their new home. 1st Meals allows these families to focus on building their new life, as well as save their financial resources
Whenever a family at Safe Haven transitions from homelessness into their permanent home, Luke 14:12’s 1sts Meals Program will provide them with an insulated grocery bag of ready-to-heat frozen meals, sides dishes, sandwich bread, as well as another reusable grocery bag filled with healthy, non-perishable food. This past week Luke 14:12 delivered the first 35 entrees and 24 side dishes, along with 15 large bags full of non-perishable foods to Safe Haven (see images below).
We are thankful for our staff and our volunteers who have helped prepare these meals, and filled these bags with love. We are grateful to Safe Haven Family Shelter for their openness and willingness to allow us to use our gifts and mission to enrich the lives of the families that they serve.
